Upper trigram: Heaven ☰ (Qian) · Lower trigram: Heaven ☰ (Qian)
In plain EnglishA favorable flow

A time to move forward with full force

You are full of energy. It is a great time to start things and lead, but don’t run alone: keep some humility.

What does I Ching hexagram 1 (The Creative) mean?

Heaven moving with unstoppable strength: pure creative power and leadership. The drive to begin is huge, but too much of it turns into arrogance, so humility has to travel with it.

The Creative in love
Taking the initiative works well, as long as you don’t overwhelm the other person.
The Creative at work and with money
Set a big goal and push toward it, but resist the urge to go it alone.
Advice
Keep polishing yourself steadily, the way a person of character does.

The six lines of hexagram 1

Lines are read from the bottom up. When you cast a reading and a line is changing, its statement becomes the key message.

Line 1 · 初九

Neutral

“A hidden dragon: do not act yet.”

You have real strength, but it is not time to show it. Keep learning quietly and wait for the signal.

Line 2 · 九二

No blame

“The dragon appears in the field; it is fitting to meet a great person.”

Your abilities start to show and your reputation spreads. A good teacher or sponsor appears.

Line 3 · 九三

No blame

“The noble person works hard all day and stays alert at night; danger, but no blame.”

A risky position, but constant effort and self-checking keep you out of trouble.

Line 4 · 九四

No blame

“Perhaps leaping, perhaps staying in the depths; no blame.”

You are deciding whether to jump. You can retreat if you must, so trying is fine, but don’t leap recklessly.

Line 5 · 九五

No blame

“The dragon flies in the sky; it is fitting to meet a great person.”

The best position. Your will is realized and you get strong support. Lead with character.

Line 6 · 上九

Caution

“An overreaching dragon will have cause for regret.”

Climbing too high leads to regret. What is full cannot last, so know when to step back.

All lines changing · 用九

Auspicious

“A flock of dragons with no head: good fortune.”

When every line changes, power is shared and no one needs to be on top. Staying humble is lucky.
