Canopy Star Hua Gai

The star of talent and solitude

What is the Canopy Star in BaZi?

Symbolic Stars (shen sha) are extra markers read from particular combinations of characters in a Saju (Four Pillars, BaZi) chart. They describe inborn leanings rather than fixed fate, and schools differ on which stars to use. FateHive uses the nine most widely used.

A star that means deep interest and talent in the arts, religion, scholarship and the spiritual realm. Your creativity grows in time alone, and you have distinctive tastes and a worldview of your own. You sometimes feel lonely, but that solitude becomes skill. You easily stand out in research, creative work, counseling and technical fields.

How is the Canopy Star found?

Take your Year Branch and your Day Branch. Each one belongs to one of four Three Harmony groups, and each group points to one branch. If that branch appears in any pillar of your chart, the star is there.

  • Water group (Monkey · Rat · Dragon): Dragon (Chen)
  • Wood group (Pig · Rabbit · Goat): Goat (Wei)
  • Fire group (Tiger · Horse · Dog): Dog (Xu)
  • Metal group (Snake · Rooster · Ox): Ox (Chou)

Canopy Star in each pillar of your chart

  • Year Pillar (childhood and family influence): your ancestors or family have ties to religion, scholarship or art, and as a child you spent a lot of time playing quietly alone.
  • Month Pillar (social life and career): you have deep ties to specialist, technical and academic fields in your work and are strong at work you do absorbed alone.
  • Day Pillar (you and your spouse relationship): your inner world is deep and you enjoy solitude, and you value spiritual connection with your partner.
  • Hour Pillar (later life and children): spiritual activities such as religion, practice and creative work become richer in later life.

Symbolic Star readings are simplified interpretations following common Saju practice and differ between schools. They are for entertainment and self-reflection.
