What does the Jia Zi Day Pillar mean?

The Day Pillar is the two characters of the day you were born: a Heavenly Stem on top (your Day Master, the “you” of a Saju chart) and an Earthly Branch below (your inner self and spouse palace). In Jia Zi (甲子), the Day Master is Jia Wood (a tall tree growing straight up) sitting on the Rat branch, whose element is Water.

Your roots sit in water (Direct Resource), so learning and curiosity run deep and you are blessed with help from elders. Outwardly upright and confident, inwardly you think a lot and are delicate, so you tend to deliberate long before deciding.

Jia Zi personality: the Jia Wood Day Master

Jia Wood is like a great tree reaching straight toward the sky. You are not afraid to step up and lead, and once you set a goal you push toward it to the end. People often see you as a pillar to lean on, and you draw your energy from starting things and breaking new ground. You can come across as stubborn, so listening a little more to others’ advice leads to bigger growth.

What makes Jia Zi different from the other five Jia Wood Day Pillars is the branch it sits on, covered below.

The Rat seat: your inner self

With Zi beneath your Day Master, you are deeper inside than you seem, and clever. There is Water energy in your spouse seat, so you are easily drawn to people who are intelligent, emotional and quick to sense. If you don’t show your inner feelings to each other, misunderstandings build, so a habit of confirming feelings in words makes the relationship last.

Jia Zi in love and marriage

The energy of care (Direct Resource) sits in your spouse seat, so you tend to meet warm, understanding partners. It is a relationship in which you become a refuge for each other.

Jia Wood is a dependable, big-tree kind of partner. When you like someone you step forward and protect them, and you take promises and responsibility seriously. Easy to lean on, but if you insist on your own way the other person can feel pressed; listening first keeps the love steady.

Direct Resource here means: Direct Resource (Zheng Yin) stands for scholastic luck, the support of others and a stable base of backing. You enjoy learning and feel a sense of achievement in building knowledge, and a flow of help from parents, teachers and elders appears often. Your careful, thoughtful nature earns trust, but you sometimes need to take bold challenges so that choosing only the safest option doesn’t make you miss chances.

Energy and life stage

Bathing (Mu Yu): a time of washing and dressing up. Charm and sensitivity rise, but the energy is also exposed to mood swings and temptation.

Hidden inside the Rat branch: Ren (Water, 10 days), Gui (Water, 20 days). These quieter energies show up in private, under stress or later in life.

Health tendencies of Wood Day Masters

Areas to look after: liver, gallbladder, eyes, muscles and nerves.

Too much Wood energy makes irritation and anger rise easily, and you may often get headaches, a stiff neck and shoulders, and tired eyes. Rather than reaching for alcohol to dampen anger, work it off with walking and stretching.

Too little Wood energy can leave muscles and ligaments stiff, eyes tired and motivation low. Top up the energy of growth with green vegetables, regular stretching and morning sunlight.

Jia Zi compatibility

  • Six Harmony: the Rat pairs with the Ox. People with a Ox Day Branch often feel an easy pull toward you.
  • Three Harmony: the Rat · Dragon · Monkey form a Water team, so those animals tend to bring out your best.
  • Clash: the Rat clashes with the Horse. It is not doom, only a spot where friction and change come easily.
  • Perfect match on stem and branch: Ji Chou (己丑) combines with Jia Zi on both the stem and the branch.
  • Opposite pillar (most friction): Geng Wu (庚午): its stem is Seven Killings to you and its branch clashes with yours.

Day Pillars are one part of compatibility. For a full comparison of two charts, try the compatibility reading.

How do I find my Day Pillar?
